The Meaning of Health and Healing
1.1 Introduction
Few concepts are as familiar—and yet as difficult to define—as health. It is a term used daily by physicians, nurses, psychologists, therapists, policymakers, researchers and patients. Despite its apparent simplicity, health is a multidimensional concept that has been interpreted differently across cultures, historical periods and scientific disciplines.
For centuries, health was primarily understood as the absence of disease. This biomedical perspective led to extraordinary advances in anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology and surgery. Modern medicine has dramatically increased life expectancy and reduced mortality from infectious diseases, trauma and many chronic conditions. These achievements remain among the greatest successes of scientific inquiry.
Yet clinical experience has repeatedly demonstrated that the absence of diagnosable disease does not necessarily imply that a person is healthy. Individuals with no detectable pathology may experience profound psychological distress, social isolation or a loss of meaning. Conversely, many people living with chronic illness maintain fulfilling relationships, emotional resilience and an active participation in society.
These observations have encouraged a broader understanding of health. Contemporary healthcare increasingly recognises that biological, psychological, social and environmental factors interact continuously throughout life. Health is therefore better understood as a dynamic capacity to function, adapt and participate in meaningful relationships than as a static state of perfection.
This broader perspective does not diminish the importance of biomedical science. Rather, it places biomedical knowledge within a wider framework that acknowledges the complexity of human life. Throughout this book, scientific evidence remains the primary basis for evaluating healthcare interventions. Ethical reflection and, where appropriate, biblical perspectives are introduced as complementary interpretative frameworks rather than substitutes for empirical investigation.
This chapter lays the conceptual foundation for the entire volume. It examines how definitions of health have evolved, evaluates major models of healthcare, introduces the principles of whole-person healthcare and explores how different disciplines contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of human well-being.
1.2 Why Definitions Matter
Definitions are never merely semantic. They shape research priorities, healthcare policy, clinical practice and public expectations.
A narrow definition of health may focus exclusively on diagnosing and treating disease. Such an approach is highly effective for acute illness, emergency medicine and many specialised interventions. However, it may overlook factors that influence long-term recovery, quality of life and patient experience.
Conversely, an excessively broad definition risks becoming so inclusive that health loses conceptual precision. If every aspect of human life is regarded as part of health, the term may become too vague to guide scientific research or clinical decision-making.
A balanced definition should therefore satisfy several criteria.
It should be scientifically defensible, clinically useful, educationally meaningful and sufficiently flexible to accommodate ongoing developments in medicine and healthcare research.
Characteristics of a Useful Definition of Health
A robust definition of health should:
- be evidence-informed rather than ideology-driven;
- distinguish health from disease without reducing one to the other;
- recognise the interaction between biological, psychological and social factors;
- remain applicable across cultures and healthcare systems;
- support measurable clinical outcomes;
- encourage patient-centred care while maintaining scientific clarity.

1.3 Historical Development of the Concept of Health
The meaning of health has never been static. Every era has interpreted health through the lens of its prevailing scientific knowledge, philosophical assumptions and cultural values.
Ancient Civilisations
Early medical traditions in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China often combined empirical observations with religious or philosophical explanations. Disease could be attributed to natural causes, spiritual forces or an imbalance within the individual. Although these systems differed considerably, many recognised that health involved more than physical symptoms alone.
Classical Greek Medicine
A major turning point occurred with Hippocratic medicine. Rather than attributing illness primarily to supernatural causes, Hippocratic physicians emphasised careful observation of patients, environmental influences and the natural course of disease. This shift laid the groundwork for medicine as a systematic discipline based on observation and reason.
Health was frequently associated with balance: harmony within the body and between the individual and the surrounding environment. While many specific theories from this period have since been superseded, the commitment to careful clinical observation remains foundational to modern medicine.
Roman and Medieval Developments
Roman medicine expanded anatomical and surgical knowledge, while medieval healthcare was shaped by a combination of inherited classical traditions, emerging universities and religious institutions. Hospitals increasingly became centres of organised care, reflecting both medical practice and social responsibility toward the sick.
The Scientific Revolution
From the seventeenth century onward, advances in anatomy, physiology, microscopy and experimental science transformed medicine. The identification of infectious agents, the development of vaccination, antisepsis and later antibiotics revolutionised healthcare and dramatically reduced mortality from many diseases.
These achievements reinforced a biomedical understanding of health centred on identifying and treating specific pathological processes.
Twentieth Century Expansion
During the twentieth century, clinicians and researchers increasingly recognised that biological explanations alone could not account for many health outcomes. Chronic diseases, mental health conditions and long-term rehabilitation highlighted the importance of behaviour, relationships, environment and social determinants.
This broader understanding paved the way for the biopsychosocial model and, more recently, whole-person approaches to healthcare.
1.4 The Biomedical Model
Origins, Achievements and Limitations
Introduction
The biomedical model has been the dominant paradigm in Western medicine for more than a century. Its influence extends beyond clinical practice to medical education, scientific research, healthcare policy and public expectations of what medicine can achieve.
At its core, the biomedical model views disease as a consequence of identifiable biological abnormalities. These abnormalities may arise from genetic mutations, infections, metabolic disturbances, immune dysfunction, trauma or degenerative processes. The task of medicine is to identify these abnormalities through systematic observation, diagnostic investigation and scientific analysis, and then to restore normal physiological function through evidence-based interventions.
This approach has transformed human health. Many diseases that were once fatal are now preventable, treatable or manageable. Improvements in sanitation, vaccination, antibiotics, imaging technologies, surgical techniques and intensive care have dramatically increased life expectancy and reduced suffering across the world.
The biomedical model therefore remains an indispensable foundation of modern healthcare. Nevertheless, its remarkable success has also revealed important limitations when addressing chronic illness, mental health disorders and the broader determinants of health.
1.4.1 Historical Development
The biomedical model emerged gradually from centuries of scientific discovery.
The Renaissance stimulated anatomical investigation through pioneers such as Andreas Vesalius, whose meticulous dissections corrected many misconceptions inherited from classical medicine. Later, William Harvey demonstrated the circulation of blood, fundamentally changing physiological understanding.
The nineteenth century marked another decisive turning point. Rudolf Virchow’s work in cellular pathology demonstrated that many diseases originate at the cellular level, shifting medical thinking from imbalances of bodily humours to identifiable structural abnormalities. Around the same time, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch established the germ theory of disease, providing compelling evidence that microorganisms are responsible for many infectious diseases.
These discoveries transformed medicine from an observational discipline into a laboratory-based science. Diagnosis increasingly relied on measurable evidence rather than speculation, and treatment became more targeted and effective.
The twentieth century accelerated this development through advances in pharmacology, immunology, genetics, radiology and molecular biology. The ability to visualise organs, analyse biochemical pathways and sequence the human genome further strengthened the biomedical approach.
1.4.2 Core Assumptions
Although the biomedical model has evolved over time, several fundamental assumptions continue to underpin its methodology.
Disease has biological causes
Disease is primarily understood as the result of measurable biological dysfunction. Identifying the underlying pathology is therefore essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Objective measurement is central
Clinical observations are complemented by laboratory tests, imaging techniques, physiological measurements and other objective investigations. These methods reduce diagnostic uncertainty and improve reproducibility.
Evidence guides intervention
Therapeutic decisions should be informed by the best available scientific evidence, integrating clinical expertise with high-quality research and the values and preferences of patients.
Reductionism as a scientific method
The biomedical model often analyses complex biological systems by studying their individual components, such as organs, tissues, cells and molecules. This reductionist approach has generated profound insights into disease mechanisms and remains a powerful research strategy.
However, reductionism is a methodological tool rather than a complete description of human health. Complex interactions between biological, psychological and social factors may require broader explanatory models.

The success of the biomedical model is evident in numerous areas of healthcare.
Infectious Diseases
The identification of pathogenic microorganisms led to vaccination programmes, antimicrobial therapies and infection control measures that have prevented millions of deaths worldwide.
Surgery
Advances in anaesthesia, aseptic technique and surgical technology have enabled increasingly complex procedures with substantially improved safety and outcomes.
Medical Imaging
Radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) have transformed diagnostic accuracy by allowing clinicians to visualise internal structures and physiological processes.
Pharmacology
Evidence-based drug development has produced effective treatments for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cancer and many other conditions.
Genetics and Precision Medicine
Rapid developments in genomics and molecular biology are enabling increasingly personalised approaches to diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.
Collectively, these advances illustrate the extraordinary capacity of biomedical science to reduce morbidity and mortality and to improve quality of life.

The biomedical model possesses several enduring strengths.
It is grounded in reproducible scientific methods and has generated an extensive evidence base for diagnosis and treatment. Standardised diagnostic criteria improve consistency across healthcare settings, while rigorous clinical trials provide a framework for evaluating therapeutic interventions.
Its emphasis on measurable outcomes has also facilitated quality improvement, public health surveillance and international collaboration in medical research.
Furthermore, the biomedical model has demonstrated remarkable adaptability. New technologies—including molecular diagnostics, artificial intelligence-assisted imaging and precision medicine—continue to expand its capabilities without abandoning its commitment to empirical investigation.

The Continuing Importance of Biomedical Assessment
A patient presenting with fatigue may also experience stress, poor sleep or social difficulties. Nevertheless, the initial clinical assessment must first exclude serious biomedical causes such as anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, infection or malignancy. A whole-person approach does not replace biomedical investigation; it builds upon it by considering additional factors once urgent pathology has been addressed.

The achievements of the biomedical model are undeniable, yet many contemporary health challenges cannot be explained solely by biological mechanisms. 1.5 The Biopsychosocial Model
A Broader Understanding of Health
Introduction
By the middle of the twentieth century, remarkable advances in biomedical science had transformed healthcare. Infectious diseases could increasingly be prevented or treated, surgical outcomes had improved dramatically, and new diagnostic technologies provided unprecedented insight into human physiology.
Despite these achievements, many clinicians recognised that biological explanations alone were insufficient to explain the full range of human illness. Patients with similar diagnoses often experienced very different outcomes. Some recovered rapidly, whereas others developed persistent disability despite comparable pathology. Psychological distress, social isolation, economic hardship and adverse childhood experiences frequently influenced recovery in ways that could not be explained by biological mechanisms alone.
These observations prompted a reconsideration of how health and disease should be understood.
1.5.1 The Contribution of George L. Engel
In 1977, psychiatrist George L. Engel proposed the biopsychosocial model, arguing that health and illness arise from the interaction of biological, psychological and social factors rather than from biology alone.
Engel did not reject biomedical science. Instead, he argued that its explanatory scope was incomplete when applied to the complexity of human health. He maintained that clinicians should consider the patient as a whole person rather than focusing exclusively on pathological processes.
His proposal represented an expansion—not a replacement—of the biomedical model.

The biopsychosocial model therefore builds upon biomedical knowledge rather than replacing it.
1.5.3 Psychological Factors
Psychological processes influence health through multiple pathways.
Examples include:
- cognitive appraisal;
- emotions;
- stress responses;
- coping strategies;
- resilience;
- personality characteristics;
- health behaviours;
- motivation.
Stress illustrates this interaction particularly well.
Acute stress may enhance adaptive responses, whereas chronic stress can influence sleep, immune regulation, cardiovascular function and psychological well-being.
Similarly, depression and anxiety may alter pain perception, treatment adherence and recovery following illness.
These observations demonstrate that psychological processes can influence biological functioning without implying that disease is “merely psychological.”
1.5.4 Social Factors
Human beings exist within networks of relationships.
Consequently, social determinants exert profound effects on health.
Important examples include:
- family relationships;
- education;
- employment;
- income;
- housing;
- culture;
- community participation;
- healthcare access;
- discrimination;
- social support.
Research consistently demonstrates that loneliness and chronic social isolation are associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes.
Conversely, supportive relationships often improve resilience, recovery and adherence to treatment.

Rather than asking only,
“What disease does this patient have?”
the clinician also asks,
“How is this illness affecting this person’s life?”

- What support systems are available?
- Which environmental factors influence recovery?
- Are there barriers to treatment adherence?
- What strengths and protective factors can be mobilised?
This broader perspective encourages person-centred care while maintaining scientific rigour.

Two patients present with similar MRI findings demonstrating mild lumbar degeneration.
Patient A remains physically active, has strong family support and continues working.

A purely biomedical approach may not fully explain these differences.
The biopsychosocial model encourages clinicians to assess biological findings alongside psychological and social contributors to disability and recovery.
1.5.6 Strengths of the Biopsychosocial Model
The model offers several important advantages.
It:
- recognises patient individuality;
- integrates multiple scientific disciplines;
- supports patient-centred healthcare;
- improves communication between healthcare professionals;
- encourages preventive medicine;
- facilitates rehabilitation;
- acknowledges social determinants of health.
It has therefore become highly influential in family medicine, rehabilitation medicine, psychiatry, psychology, pain medicine and public health.
1.5.7 Criticisms
Despite its influence, the biopsychosocial model has also been criticised.
Some authors argue that it is conceptually broad and can be difficult to operationalise in clinical practice. Without clear definitions, there is a risk that clinicians include every conceivable influence without distinguishing those that are supported by evidence from those that are speculative.
Another concern is inconsistency in implementation. In some settings, the psychological and social dimensions receive little attention despite the theoretical acceptance of the model. In others, biological pathology may be underestimated if psychosocial explanations are given disproportionate emphasis.
These critiques highlight the importance of a balanced and evidence-informed application rather than a simplistic interpretation.

1.6 Whole-Person Healthcare
Towards an Integrated Understanding of Health
Introduction
Healthcare has undergone profound transformation during the past century. Advances in biomedical science have dramatically improved the diagnosis and treatment of disease, while the biopsychosocial model has broadened clinical attention to include psychological and social determinants of health. Yet many clinicians and researchers continue to argue that even these frameworks do not fully capture the complexity of the human person.
Patients are more than collections of organs, symptoms or diagnoses. They are individuals with histories, relationships, values, goals and aspirations. Effective healthcare therefore requires an approach that recognises the person behind the patient while remaining firmly grounded in scientific evidence.
Whole-person healthcare has emerged as an integrative framework that seeks to meet this challenge.
Rather than replacing established medical practice, it builds upon the strengths of biomedical and biopsychosocial medicine, while encouraging a broader understanding of human functioning, prevention, resilience and participation in everyday life.
1.6.1 Defining Whole-Person Healthcare
Whole-person healthcare may be defined as:
An evidence-informed approach to healthcare that seeks to understand and support the biological, psychological, relational, social and functional dimensions of the individual in an integrated and person-centred manner.
Several elements of this definition deserve emphasis.
First, the approach remains evidence-informed. It does not abandon scientific standards or substitute anecdotal experience for empirical research.
Second, the focus is on the person, not merely the disease. Diagnosis remains essential, but the clinician also considers how illness affects the patient’s daily functioning, relationships, work, emotional well-being and quality of life.
Third, whole-person healthcare recognises that health is dynamic. Individuals continually adapt to changing biological, psychological and social circumstances. Healthcare therefore aims not only to treat disease but also to strengthen resilience, support recovery and promote long-term well-being.

Where disease-centred care asks:

person-centred care also asks:

- How does illness affect their family and daily life?
- Which strengths can support recovery?
This shift changes the clinical conversation.
The patient is no longer viewed primarily as the recipient of treatment but as an active participant in healthcare decisions.
Shared decision-making therefore becomes an essential component of professional practice.

Both patients have identical echocardiographic findings and receive the same evidence-based pharmacological treatment.
However:
Patient A has a supportive family, remains physically active and understands the treatment plan.

From a biomedical perspective the disease is similar.
From a whole-person perspective the clinical needs are very different.
Recognising these differences enables healthcare professionals to tailor interventions more effectively while remaining faithful to evidence-based medicine.
1.6.3 Functional Health
An important feature of whole-person healthcare is its emphasis on function.
Traditional medicine often measures success by reducing disease activity.
Whole-person healthcare asks additional questions.
Can the individual:
- work?
- study?
- maintain relationships?
- participate in family life?
- enjoy meaningful activities?
- remain independent?
Functional outcomes frequently matter as much to patients as laboratory values or imaging findings.
Consequently, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and social support become integral components of healthcare rather than secondary considerations.

1.6.4 Prevention and Health Promotion
Whole-person healthcare also extends beyond the treatment of illness.
It recognises three complementary levels of prevention.
Primary Prevention
Reducing the likelihood that disease develops.
Examples include vaccination, healthy nutrition, physical activity and smoking cessation.
Secondary Prevention
Detecting disease at an early stage through screening and timely intervention.
Tertiary Prevention
Reducing disability and improving quality of life among individuals living with chronic illness.
Increasingly, some authors also discuss quaternary prevention, which seeks to prevent unnecessary medical interventions and overdiagnosis.
Together these approaches demonstrate that healthcare is concerned not only with curing disease but also with maintaining health and preventing avoidable harm.
1.6.5 Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Because health is multidimensional, no single profession possesses all the expertise required to address every aspect of patient care.
Whole-person healthcare therefore encourages collaboration among:
- physicians;
- nurses;
- psychologists;
- physiotherapists;
- occupational therapists;
- dietitians;
- pharmacists;
- social workers;
- pastoral caregivers, where appropriate within the patient’s wishes and the healthcare setting.
Each discipline contributes according to its own expertise, while maintaining professional boundaries and mutual respect.

Whole-person healthcare also presents important challenges.
First, comprehensive assessment requires time, training and effective teamwork.
Second, healthcare systems often reward procedures more readily than communication or coordination.
Third, the concept of “wholeness” can become vague if it is not clearly defined. For this reason, this book uses the term in a structured and evidence-informed manner, referring to the integration of biological, psychological, relational, social and functional dimensions without implying that every aspect of human life belongs within the scope of clinical practice.
Maintaining conceptual clarity is essential if whole-person healthcare is to remain scientifically robust and clinically useful.

1.7 Defining Health
The World Health Organization and Beyond
Introduction
Any discussion of health requires careful attention to definition. The way health is defined influences healthcare policy, research priorities, medical education, clinical practice and public expectations.
Definitions determine not only how health is measured but also how healthcare systems allocate resources and evaluate outcomes.
Throughout history, health has been defined in many different ways. Some definitions focus primarily on biological functioning, whereas others emphasise adaptation, resilience, quality of life or human flourishing.
Among these, no definition has had greater international influence than that proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948.
1.7.1 The WHO Definition
The Constitution of the World Health Organization defines health as:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
When introduced in 1948, this definition represented a profound shift in medical thinking.

In everyday language the words health and disease appear to be simple opposites. A person is either healthy or ill. Clinical practice, however, reveals a much more complex reality.
An individual may have advanced hypertension without experiencing any symptoms. Another may suffer severe fatigue, pain or disability despite the absence of demonstrable pathology. A third person may have recovered biologically from illness but still be unable to resume work because of persistent psychological or social difficulties.
These examples demonstrate that health cannot be understood solely by identifying disease. Medicine therefore distinguishes between several related but distinct concepts.
Understanding these distinctions enables clinicians to communicate more precisely, conduct better research and provide more person-centred care.
1.8.1 Disease
Disease refers to objectively identifiable abnormalities in the structure or function of the body.

1.9 Salutogenesis, Resilience and Human Flourishing

Introduction
For much of the history of modern medicine, research has focused primarily on the causes of disease. This pathogenetic perspective has yielded remarkable advances in understanding infections, cardiovascular disease, cancer, metabolic disorders and numerous other conditions.
While this approach remains indispensable, it raises an important complementary question:
Why do some individuals remain healthy despite exposure to significant adversity?
Not everyone exposed to stress, trauma or disease develops chronic illness. Some individuals demonstrate remarkable resilience, recover rapidly from setbacks and maintain meaningful participation in life despite substantial challenges.
The study of these processes gave rise to the concept of salutogenesis.
Rather than asking,
“What causes disease?”
salutogenesis asks,
“What creates, maintains and strengthens health?”
This perspective complements rather than replaces pathogenic medicine.
1.9.1 Aaron Antonovsky and Salutogenesis
The concept of salutogenesis was introduced by the medical sociologist Aaron Antonovsky during the 1970s.
Antonovsky observed that many survivors of extreme adversity, including Holocaust survivors, displayed unexpectedly positive psychological and physical adaptation despite profound trauma.
Instead of focusing exclusively on risk factors, he sought to identify the characteristics that enable individuals to remain healthy under difficult circumstances.
His work shifted attention from deficits toward human strengths and adaptive capacities.

- balanced nutrition;

Within contemporary healthcare literature, flourishing is often associated with:

- positive relationships;
- meaningful participation;

Importantly, flourishing does not imply perfection or the absence of suffering. Rather, it describes the capacity to pursue a life of purpose and value even in the presence of chronic illness or disability.
For readers approaching this subject from a Christian perspective, flourishing may also be understood in relation to vocation, stewardship, love of neighbour and hope. In this book, such theological reflections are presented as worldview-based interpretations that complement, but do not replace, empirical scientific evidence.

Every healthcare system operates, either explicitly or implicitly, from certain assumptions about what it means to be human. These assumptions influence ethical decision-making, concepts of health and illness, professional responsibilities and the goals of medical care.
Biomedical science excels at describing biological mechanisms, diagnosing disease and evaluating interventions. It does not, however, answer philosophical or theological questions concerning human identity, dignity, purpose or ultimate meaning.
These questions belong to the disciplines of philosophy, ethics and theology.
Within the Christian tradition, the understanding of health is inseparable from a broader understanding of the human person. Human beings are viewed not merely as biological organisms but as persons created with inherent dignity, capable of relationships, moral responsibility and purposeful living.
This section explores these themes as elements of a Christian worldview. They are presented as theological reflections rather than empirical scientific conclusions.
1.10.1 Humanity Created in the Image of God
The opening chapters of Genesis describe humanity as being created “in the image of God” (imago Dei).

Stewardship does not imply that illness is always the result of personal failure. Many diseases arise from genetic, environmental, infectious or other factors beyond individual control.
Rather, stewardship emphasises faithful responsibility within the limits of human finitude.
1.10.5 Compassion and Healthcare
One of the defining themes of the Gospels is compassion toward those who suffer.
Jesus’ encounters with people who were sick, disabled or socially marginalised consistently demonstrate respect for their dignity and concern for their restoration. These narratives are theological accounts of Jesus’ ministry rather than clinical case reports, but they have profoundly shaped Christian understandings of caregiving.
Historically, this vision contributed to the establishment of hospitals, nursing traditions and charitable institutions dedicated to the care of the sick.
Compassion, in this context, is more than an emotional response. It is expressed through attentive listening, practical assistance, advocacy and a commitment to relieve suffering wherever possible.

Introduction
Complementary healthcare encompasses a wide range of practices, therapeutic systems and health philosophies. Some interventions have become integrated into conventional healthcare following rigorous scientific evaluation. Others remain controversial because evidence is limited, inconsistent or absent. Still others raise ethical or worldview-related questions that extend beyond clinical effectiveness.
For patients, healthcare professionals and policy makers, this diversity presents an important challenge:
How can complementary healthcare be evaluated fairly, critically and responsibly?
Neither uncritical acceptance nor automatic rejection provides an adequate response.
Instead, careful evaluation requires a framework that integrates scientific evidence, clinical judgement, ethical reflection and, in the context of this book, Christian theological discernment.
1.11.1 Principles of Scientific Evaluation
The first principle of this book is that all claims regarding diagnosis, treatment or health outcomes should, where possible, be evaluated using the methods of contemporary scientific research.
Important questions include:
- Has the intervention been adequately studied?
- What is the quality of the available evidence?
- Are the reported benefits reproducible?
- What are the potential risks?
- How large are the observed effects?
- Are the findings clinically meaningful as well as statistically significant?
Evidence exists on a continuum. High-quality systematic reviews and well-conducted randomised controlled trials generally provide stronger support than isolated case reports or anecdotal experiences.
Scientific evaluation therefore remains the primary method for assessing clinical effectiveness.

Such assumptions should be examined carefully and distinguished from empirically testable claims.
Within this book, theological discernment asks questions such as:
- What underlying worldview informs this practice?
- Are its spiritual claims compatible with biblical teaching?
- Does it encourage dependence upon practices that conflict with Christian faith?
- Can specific therapeutic techniques be distinguished from their original philosophical or religious context?
The aim is neither to condemn nor to endorse an intervention solely because of its historical origin. Rather, the goal is to evaluate each practice on its own merits, considering both its empirical evidence and its underlying worldview.

Separating Technique from Worldview
A relaxation exercise designed to reduce stress may be evaluated on its physiological effects, such as lowering heart rate or improving sleep quality. If the same exercise is presented together with metaphysical claims about unseen energies or spiritual transformation, those additional claims require separate evaluation.
Distinguishing between measurable therapeutic effects and worldview assertions helps prevent confusion and allows both scientific and theological questions to be addressed appropriately.
1.11.5 Categories of Complementary Therapies
To assist systematic evaluation, the therapies discussed in this book will generally be considered within several broad categories.
These include:
- biological and nutritional interventions;
- manual and physical therapies;
- mind–body approaches;
- lifestyle interventions;
- traditional medical systems;
- energy-based therapies;
- spiritually oriented practices.
Each category contains considerable diversity. Consequently, conclusions regarding one intervention should not automatically be generalised to all others within the same category.

1.11.6 Levels of Recommendation
